Study investigates the best forms of treatment for knee pain in athletes

by MASS4D® Insoles June 27, 2018

MASS4D® Medical Review

Knee pain is common in athletes involved in sports that require running and jumping.

It has been reported that 25% of athletes with knee pain eventually stop taking part in their favourite sport.

There is a strong association between knee pain and imbalances in the knee cap; when the knee cap shifts out of place, it stresses the knee joint and causes pain.

Sometimes knee pain is the result of abnormal knee movement over a period of time. This is usually because of a problem in the alignment of the lower body which forces the knees to move inwards while walking, running or jumping.

It is possible that weakness in the quadriceps or hip muscles can also affect movement of the lower body especially the knees. Women with knee pain are often found to have this type of muscular weakness.

Tightness in the hamstrings can also increase an athlete’s chances of developing knee pain as these muscles are responsible for bending the knees.

Foot disorders can also contribute to knee pain because of their impact on walking patterns. Such disorders can force the shinbone to twist inwards while walking, causing the knees to move inwards as well.

It is necessary for treatment to be tailor-made according to the extent and severity of the knee pain.

An exercise programme that targets the muscles of the hip, knee (quadriceps and hamstrings), trunk, and the iliotibial tract can be effective in treating knee pain.

For knee cap dislocations, taping can help in positioning the kneecap correctly. Braces can also be used to minimise imbalances in the knee cap.

While foot orthotics may not be beneficial for all types of knee pain, these can be useful for treating knee pain that is caused by foot deformities.

MASS4D® Insoles are helpful in managing foot deformities such as flat arches that can have an effect on the overall movement of the body.

By promoting proper foot movement, these orthotics allow for healthy movement of the body as well. This helps in reducing stressful movements of the knees and minimising knee pain.

The best part is that you can easily purchase these insoles at the click of a button.
