Knee osteoarthritis is a condition of the knees that makes it difficult for older adults to take part in physical activities. This condition can develop as a result of high mechanical stress placed on the knee joints over time.
One of the factors that can increase chances of developing knee osteoarthritis is a bad foot posture such as a flatfoot condition that can affect the way the knees function.
The authors of this study were interested in finding out the effect of knee osteoarthritis on the functioning of the toe, most specifically on the ability to flex the toes. This is an important function required for walking.
They recruited 120 Japanese women with the condition and 108 healthy individuals with no complaints of knee pain.
The group of women with knee osteoarthritis included those receiving nonsurgical treatment for their condition as well as those awaiting surgery.
Relevant information about all the women was collected such as age, weight, height and body mass index.
Toe grip strength was measured using a special device called the toe-grip dynamometer.
The study found a relationship between toe grip strength and knee osteoarthritis among Japanese women.
Women with the condition were also found to have higher body fat (based on weight and height) and lowered strength in the knee muscles of the affected leg.
This may be due to reduced physical activity that eventually leads to decreased strength in the toes as well as the knees.
